Out of the Dust | String Trio

Out of the Dust | String Trio

Instrumentation: Violin, Viola, Cello

Duration: 10 Minutes, Three Movements

Dedicated To: Grandmother

Program Notes: There was a large poster in my small school's exceedingly small library in 1999, when I was in second grade, advertising a book that had just won a Newberry Metal. As a visually-oriented child just starting to read, I was drawn not to the text on the poster, but to its photo of a young girl in a straw hat with bright eyes and pale hair staring right back at me. A few years later I would go on to read the book that poster was advertising, Out of the Dust, and nearly every other book by its author, Karen Hesse. The picture of the girl stayed in my mind, though that mental image evolved with time into something wholly my own. In recent years I've come to feel close to the era of the Great Depression, via my composer grandmother whose childhood was during those years, and while I was writing the first movement of this piece I was strongly pulled towards images of that era. It wasn't long before the book I've been softly haunted by for over a decade surfaced as both inspiration for the rest of the piece and substance for the title of it.
